May Day March

Come join us in celebrating International Workers Day; hosted and put on by Manchester Trades Council. This year we will start at 3pm with a march from St Peter's Square, where we will march to Niamos in Hulme via All Saints Park and Hulme Arch Bridge. We will be joined by all sectors of the labour movement, community groups, and international campaigns.

The festival will see music from; the Irish singer and flautist Ríoghnach Connolly (and associates), Manchester Radical Tradition with belting union bangers designed to be sung by everyone, radical rap from Hulme's own Rootz, and Latin music you cannot help but dance to from The Mancumbians. Along with this we will have speeches from trade unions, community groups, and international campaigns, along with food provided at an affordable price.

For some history: International Workers Day dates back to 1886 and he Haymarket Affair in Chicago, America. There workers launched a general strike for an 8-hour work day. The strike was mired by violence from the state against those campaigning for something we consider a fundamental right today. In 1890 the international trade union movement agreed to remember those events in Chicago, which started on the 1st of May, as International Workers Day. It is recognised as a National Holiday in the vast majority of the world, with the May Bank Holiday established in the 1970s to commemorate it in Britain.

Some come and join us for the festivities! Long Live the 1st of May, Long Live Workers Day!
