Our History of Sanctuary in Hulme

The Church of the Ascension has long been a place of welcome and refuge. In the 1980s, our church became known nationally and internationally when Fr. John Methuen and the congregation offered sanctuary to Viraj Mendis, a Sri Lankan student seeking political asylum. For two years, Viraj lived within the church while his case was fought in the courts and during that time Ascension became a symbol of the wider struggle for justice and compassion in the face of political persecution.

This act of courage and solidarity is an important part of our story. It reminds us that the call to offer sanctuary is not just about shelter, but about standing with those who are vulnerable and advocating for dignity and human rights. We remain grateful for the legacy of Fr. John Methuen, the congregation, and the wider community whose willingness to act in faith continues to inspire the mission of the church today.
